About Us (& more!)
![]()
Fun times at Sylvan Gallery this past year. "Small Pleasures"(left) is one of my favorite exhibits of the year. One of our newest clients (and friends) was having a tough time deciding between two paintings. Teri ended up going home with Paul Lipp's little gem, Shapes and Colors! On the right, gallery artist Paul Lipp with his mentor and friend, artist Ken Davies. Their relationship goes back to when Paul was a student of Ken's at Paier College. Paul ended up teaching there too, after graduating from Paier. (Left & Middle) I have to say, our openings are a lot of fun. Collectors, artists and new gallery goers meet for the first time and talk "art"...what could be better? Photographed on the far right is an image from our 1st juried exhibition, "A Sense of Place". All the paintings were juried into the exhibition by artist/instructor Lou Bonamarte. It was not only our first juried exhibition, but our first indoor/outdoor event. A portion of the proceeds were donated to "Save the Sound" organization and many area businesses donated awards! Thank you to the artists and businesses who participated in this event!
Sylvan Gallery is proud to represent some of the finest contemporary artists on the Connecticut shoreline as well as select artists from the surrounding New England states and from other areas of the country. Many of the artists working in oil, watercolor, print media, and sculpture have been exhibiting for over 25 years and have won significant national awards. The gallery also features the work of talented emerging artists. The common thread among all the artists is their high degree of technical skill and craftsmanship, and their passion to create their own unique visions of the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Gallery directors Ann and Rick Scanlan opened the doors to Sylvan Gallery in July of 2001. Prior to that they lived for almost 20 years in New York City. Ann’s own studies in art began at Miami University in Oxford, OH, where she earned a BFA degree. When she moved to New York City, she enrolled at the Art Students League and spent eight formative years drawing and painting the figure. The class spent the month of June in Stowe, VT, for plein air landscape painting. Rick worked as a commercial photographer in New York, specializing in architectural photography. They moved to Clinton, CT, in 2000 and realized a dream of theirs when they opened Sylvan Gallery. Set in a late nineteenth-century Victorian house, it became the perfect setting for showcasing realistic works of art. In the gallery’s first review it was described as an "oasis of art." Since then, it has received numerous reviews. Please check back for upcoming "Review" page.
This site will be continually updated as new works come in weekly from the artists. Floral still lifes, garden scenes, New England and western landscapes, seascapes, still life, figurative, and marines are represented throughout the year in the gallery's exhibits. We invite you to visit us often. There is nothing we like better than introducing collectors, and those who appreciate artwork, to the quality work of these artists. We are so pleased that the comment we hear most often from people visiting for the first time or after many times, is that they are amazed at the consistent high quality of artwork that is shown in the gallery.
Please also check out our photography blogsite: www.rickscanlan.blogspot.com. In addition to being a marveous gallery co-director, Rick has been a commercial photographer for over 20 years. For the past two years we have been enjoying photographing weddings together. Somehow that ties in perfectly with having a gallery. Our most recent wedding photography is up on our blogsite.
