Dalia RamanauskasDahlia Ramanauskas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania. She also lived in Germany before moving to the United States where she became a naturalized citizen in 1958. She received her early training in art at Southern Connecticut University and then taught art for two years in the Connecticut public school system before becoming a full-time artist.
Ms. Ramanauskas is inspired by such ordinary objects as corrugated cardboard boxes, hatpins, dolls, and colorful windup toys. After choosing the objects she then composes a picture establishing her own personal scenario. In creating her still lifes she constructs a totally imaginary situation for the otherwise believable objects, and cities, oceans and new worlds emerge. She then invites the viewer to experience the world through her eyes. Ramanauskas works with water-soluble materials on paper using pen and acrylic ink. She uses a crosshatching technique, drawing one layer of parallel lines over another. Ms. Ramanauskas’s work can be found in the collections of Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, New Britain Museum of Modern Art, AT&T, Chase Manhattan Bank, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Virginia Museum of Art, Deleware Art Museum, Prudential Insurance Company, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Kemper Group, Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, OH; Portland Museum, and Merrill Lynch.
