SYLVAN GALLERY
John StannardJohn Stannard’s work is well-known on the Connecticut shoreline. Focusing on marsh scenes, shoreline cottages, and local farms, his watercolor and oil paintings are characterized by powerful design and tightly controlled handling of light and shadows intermingled with exquisite detail. His work recalls that of Andrew Wyeth in handling of detail and atmospheric mood of the scene. He is a member of the Guilford Art League, the Madison Art League, Old Lyme Art Association, Connecticut Watercolor Society, and Mystic Art Association.
John is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and worked for forty years as an illustrator for various companies in Connecticut. For twenty years he was Director of Visual Media Design at CT Department of Transportation. There he produced detailed renderings and three dimensional scale models of proposed transportation projects for public hearings. In 1989 he retired and became involved full-time in Fine Art Painting. He had early success winning awards in juried shows (12 awards in first 15 shows entered).
