Peter Layne Arguimbau

Peter Layne Arguimbau paints a wide variety of subject matter and has completed commissions of all kinds, including yachts, land and seascapes, portraits, and still life. A specialty of his is marine painting, which combines his knowledge as a sailor and the technical abilities of an accomplished classically trained artist. In 2001 he attended the America's Cup Jubilee Race Week at Cowes, Isle of Wight, to photograph the event from numerous chase boats. This inspired a series of paintings of the event showcasing his passion for classic yachts, his keen understanding of sky, water, and weather effects, and the landscape with the dramatic Needles at the head of the Narrows, where he also isolated some of the magnificent yachts as portraits.

Arguimbau’s paintings are riveting. They have a rich old world painting quality with deep luminous transparencies. He attains these qualities by grinding his own paints from dry pigment and cooking his own oil-resinous mediums in the tradition of the Flemish Masters. He studied painting at the Art Students League of New York with classical artist Frank Mason and also studied Renaissance Art for three years in Italy. Peter has been a guest speaker on the Techniques of Flemish Masters at the Royal Academy of Design, London, and has had articles published in the American Arts Quarterly. Among his many exhibitions are those at the National Academy of Design, New York; 2005 Marine Show at India Street Gallery, Nantucket; and Wally Findlay Galleries, New York, Palm Beach, Chicago. He is in many corporate and private collections and has won numerous awards including Award of Merit, Mystic International Competition, Mystic, Connecticut.
