Jack Winslow

Jack Winslow's formal art training lasted for a period of seven years, primarily at the Art Students League of NYC, with distinguished realist painter Frank Mason. Jack studied every aspect of realism including still life, figures, portraits, interiors, and seascapes. Mason’s teachings upheld traditional craftsmanship, and Jack learned to develop the whole craft of painting where most of his paints, mediums, grounds and varnishes are prepared by hand. He is careful to employ the best materials in a sound and skillful manner. The technical aspects aside, Jack uses his art as a means of expressing his joy with that which is visible. His paintings draw their visual strength from his strong compositions, keen draftsmanship, wonderful color harmonies, and effects of light. In 1979, Jack and his wife, artist Karen Winslow, moved to Cambridge, VT. Jack has become well-known for his paintings of the Vermont countryside. His smaller oil sketches are painted en plein air. If a site especially appeals to him, he’ll do several studies of it at different times of day or even of season. His larger paintings are then completed in his studio from these studies. In his larger works he glazes on veils of delicate colors that achieve the depth, luminosity, and mystery that are hallmarks of his work. In February 1991, Jack and Karen had a major article in American Artist magazine with his painting, "Vermont Summer" featured on the cover. They have sold over 1,000 paintings in their careers.
