Sylvan Gallery Artist: Catherine Christiano

Catherine Christiano works with subjects that are close to her life and environment. She finds the ordinary in life, birth, daily rituals, everyday objects and landscapes, and creates images that are symbolic and universally meaningful. Catherine works in a variety of mediums including egg tempera, graphite and oil. The subject and the desired effect that she is interested in determine the choice of medium. Catherine admires the soft, luminous, radiant quality of egg tempera and finds its surface to be beautiful, but she also enjoys the spontaneity of oil paint with its more bold and sensuous qualities.

Catherine completed a BFA from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in 2001. She also studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Catherine came to fine art after working for some time in business and engineering, first earning an MBA from Rutgers University and a BE from Stevens Institute of Technology. In November of 2000, Catherine had a solo exhibition at Lyme Academy. She has exhibited in museums and galleries in the Northeast including the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Mattatuck Museum, the Slater Memorial Museum, and Pfizer Global Research & Development In January of 2004, her painting Binoculars was featured on the cover of The Journal of the American Medical Association. She has received awards from Connecticut Women Artists, Inc. and from William Zimmer, an art critic for The New York Times and juror of "The Connecticut Vision" at the Mattatuck Museum. She created the award winning design in a competition for a new seal for the Town of Old Lyme.
