SYLVAN GALLERY
Jennifer LiJennifer Li’s figurative paintings are contemporary genre portraits that are intellectually and psychologically compelling. Her subject matter is often of women or children in scenes that are enlivened by her very subtle sense of humor. Each work allows us an opportunity to contemplate the perceived situation. We are rewarded by their imaginative and evocative content. On a purely visual level, her works are delightful for their rich color and luminous clarity achieved by her meticulous technique which is grounded in the varnish mediums of the Dutch Golden Age. Li currently focuses on figurative work but also produces a few still lifes and floral paintings every year.
Jennifer Li studied painting for over twelve years at the Art Students League of New York under distinguished realist painters Harvey Dinnerstein and Frank Mason. She has been painting professionally since 1990. Her works have been enthusiastically received by both critics and collectors. Her paintings have been described in The New York Times as "straightforwardly beautiful" with "an element of the weird." Her subject matter, for the most part, is executed out of her own imagination. She has shown her work in galleries in Calgary, California, Indiana, New York City, and Montana including the Holter Museum in Helena, MT. Jennifer Li is married to the artist Nicholas Oberling.
